We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been — a place half-remembered and half-envisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free.

A Vision for the 21st Century

Metropolitan Community Churches have been a powerful force for inclusive spirituality during the first generation of this historic Christian movement. Many thousands have become a part of this life transforming fellowship. Millions more have been impacted by its ideals and values that will lead to full inclusion of all God's children in the church and society. It is time to consider how these same ideals and values will serve a new generation.

A window of opportunity is open. In a world where millions continue to be excluded from the family of God, we can be the positive face of a progressive spirituality. We can offer a journey of faith that leads to health, wholeness and holiness. We can bring focus to a dream for justice that has yet to be seen.

Our purpose is rooted in an experience of redemption. Our mission is to share the hope of that experience with millions more. To achieve this mission, we must develop a greater compassion in our churches to reach those who are hurting and alone. We must develop a greater zeal for outreach and service in our communities. We must encourage the participation of all members in ministry. We must develop greater intention for the quality and authenticity of what people experience in our churches.

We need leaders with the competencies and character to effectively lead congregations as servants of mission rather than guardians of the status quo. We need leaders who are learners, committed to continuous improvement. We need leaders who are teachers, shaping ideals and values as models and mentors. We need leaders engaged in a quest for excellence, accountable for both relationships and results. Most of all, we need leaders with a passion to reach those alienated from God's purpose and promises. We must order our priorities and direct our resources to develop and equip such leadership.

In the years ahead, the life-changing message of MCC will continue but our movement must change. We must broaden our span of inclusion. We must reach the youthful generations with a message of relevance and opportunity. We must reach the peoples of many colors, countries and cultures with a message of welcome and equality. As a result, the membership of UFMCC of 2020 will reflect a percentage of younger people equal to that of the larger population. And, the multicultural diversity of MCC will more fully represent the color and texture or our entire global village.

This is our vision for the twenty-first century!
